What This Really Looks Like
Imagine a child, a heavy bucket in hand, rushing to school, missing out on vital lessons and the right to a bright future.
Picture someone walking farther than they should, forced to find water as nearby sources have dried up, sacrificing their time and well-being.
Think about the constant anxiety of deciding how much water can be used today, never knowing when the next supply will come, all while their dignity is diminished.
In some villages, taps yield nothing. In others, they were installed but have long ceased to function. A water scheme and dam exist on paper, but they fail to reach the families who need them most.

This isn’t a choice; it’s a heartbreaking reality.Â
The Scale of the Crisis
Thousands of households. Tens of thousands of lives caught in desperation. Â
This isn’t just a small pocket of need; it’s an entire community deprived of something most of us take for granted - clean, accessible water - and the dignity that comes with it.
Â
And it’s not just about homes. Â
When water is unstable, the entire fabric of life - and human dignity - begins to unravel.
- Clinics are forced to operate without crucial water supplies, undermining the health and dignity of every patient.
- Early childhood centres struggle to provide basic sanitation, affecting the youngest and most vulnerable.
- Schools try to function without the most basic necessity: running water, denying children their right to education. Â
- Households lack flushing toilets, with sanitation systems either broken or non-existent, further compromising dignity. Â
- Electricity flickers like a distant dream.
Why We Can’t Stand By
This is a crisis that demands action. People shouldn’t have to plan their lives around finding water. Communities have tirelessly mapped their needs, identified failures, and raised their voices. Yet, nothing changes. Leaders find time for global campaigns, but what about their own people? Tens of thousands are still walking for water, and the taps remain dry. This is a choice to ignore their needs. We must step in where progress has been neglected for years—not just to discuss the problem but to actively fix it.

What Needs to Change
This isn’t about temporary relief; it’s about real solutions that ensure water reaches every home - consistently, safely, and close to where people live.
- Solutions must work in the real world, not just in reports.
- They must be sustainable.
- They must be built in collaboration with the communities they serve, preserving their dignity and agency.
Global Campaigns, Local Neglect
One of the clearest examples of misplaced priorities is Mandla Mandela himself. While positioning himself as a prominent voice in international Gaza activism and associating with high-profile flotilla campaigns, including the Global Sumud Flotilla, he remains a traditional leader in the Eastern Cape - a province where countless families still live without reliable access to clean water. In the communities he represents, people continue walking long distances carrying buckets, schools struggle without proper sanitation, and clinics operate under impossible conditions. The contrast is impossible to ignore: enormous energy is directed toward international political theatre while a humanitarian crisis continues unfolding in his own backyard. Solidarity abroad should never come at the expense of neglecting the basic dignity and needs of your own people.
